Sneak in more Omega 3 & 6 with Hemp Milk

Research as well as anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that Omega 3 & 6 oils, like the naturally occuring "good" fats found in fish, can promote and enhance brain developement and function.

In fact there are plenty of remarkable stories out there about improvements for kids with autism, preemies and, of course, kids with speech delays.

A naturapathic doctor suggested we try it but warned me of cheap fish oils that may be contaminated with mercury. She suggested I go with a reputable, high quality brand like Nordic Naturals.

But what do you do when your picky eating kid won't take the oil even in those snazzy little fruit flavored gel caps?

Hemp Milk. Living Harvest Hemp Milk contains 800 mg of Omega 3 and 2,600 mg of Omega 6 in each 8 oz serving. It is also a good source of calcium, Vit D, B 12 and Magnesium.

With 4 times the protein per serving as Rice Milk, it is an excellent milk alternative.

Plus it is really yummy. It comes in 3 flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate and Original; sweeted and unsweeted. It is thicker than your typical soy or rice milk but has a very smooth creamy texture. Our favorite is chocolate, of course, and we cut it a little with rice milk and warm it up for a morning hot chocolate. Just delicious and not too sweet. I know he is getting his "good" fat as he is sipping it down for breakfast.

Give it a try. I can't imagine even the pickiest kid not liking it. And, even us parents could use a little more "good" fat in our diet.

Hemp Milk is an easy, painless way to make it happen.

Good morning!

After I had Molly, 10 years ago, I had horrible acid reflux that just didn't go away. I was on prescription medication for a long time but wanted to try to handle it with diet. Something that the doctor never suggested; they wanted to do surgery. Go figure.

I went to Bastyr Clinic and they suggested I start with a morning smoothie. It really, really helped immediately and I have been having it every morning since. Something with the blackberries really helps with balancing stomach acid I was told as Bastyr.

I love it because you can customize it quite easily. So, welcome to my morning ritual. In my house it's call Mommy's Kefir and I don't really feel quite right without it. Here is how I do it but feel free to personalize it for you and yours.

In blender combine:

2 cups non-citrus juice (apple, grape, carrot or blueberry)
Big dollop or about 1 cup of plain yogurt with active cultures (like Nancy's)
12 brick of soft tofu, I use Mori-Nu
1 banana
hand full of frozen blackberries or boysenberries
2 tablespoon Psyllium (pure dietary fiber)
1 tsp. Nordic Naturals fish oil (Omega 3 & 6) Nordic Naturals

Blend until smooth. Makes enough for large breakfast portion with a little more for a light lunch or snack. Warning: if you use the Psyllium it will get very thick the longer it sits.

Incidentally, I was able to manage the reflux with diet alone and rarely have any heart burn problem anymore.

Also, as an added bonus, I like to think it is mellowing my pre-menopausal symptoms probably due to all the natural estrogen I am getting with the tofu. I don't really know if that is true but if I miss it for a couple of days then I start having hot flashing/night sweats.

Try it! You might like it!

Cheers!

Hemp Milk? Are you sure it's legal?

I hadn't even heard of Hemp Milk until I ran across a blog post at Cooking for Mara. I was still reeling after the allergy results came back and her blog really helped me out. It's amazing what you end up learning when the opportunity arises.

Hemp Milk is a terrific milk alternative; a balanced source of Omega 3 & 6, comes is 3 flavors (Chocolate, Vanilla, Original) and packs a real nutritional punch. I really sat up and took notice when I realized that it had 4x times the protein as Rice Milk.

But, careful! The extra fiber and all the Omegas can make Shea's #2 a little, shall we say, loose. Great if constipation is an issue. We cut the Chocolate with a little Rice Milk for a morning hot chocolate.
